ONLINE PSYCHOTHERAPY

This space of Psychotherapy unfolds within a Transpersonal framework that brings together Buddhist Psychology —“Science of the Mind”— in a secular way, Modern Psychology, and Contemplative Neuroscience. Drawing from the contributions of these disciplines, its main tools are dialogue and the use of specific practices and techniques such as contemplation and meditation, all within a therapeutic setting characterized by warmth and closeness.

From session to session, the client receives tasks that support the process of transforming the mind and cultivating inner skills. Advances in Neuroscience—particularly the discovery of the brain’s neuroplasticity—have shown in recent years that well-being is a skill. Therefore, just like any physical, artistic, or intellectual ability, emotional skills can be trained and learned.

As a psychotherapist, guided by the principles of Therapeutic Presence with Mindfulness and Compassion, I strive for my attitude to be one of compassionate and non-judgmental listening.

This arises from the understanding that the therapeutic alliance is a bond from one sentient being to another—one that flourishes when held with care and warmth.

In this way, the work focuses on the development of what His Holiness the Dalai Lama calls emotional hygiene: training the mind with our human intelligence to generate and gradually increase mental states such as love, compassion, wisdom, contentment, patience, and others that are conducive to well-being and inner peace, as well as to the benefit of others.

In two illustrative words, this therapeutic approach unites reason with compassion.

Neuroscience has discovered neuroplasticity—the way the brain changes through experience and training—and current evidence from Contemplative Neuroscience supports the notion of humans’ innate goodness. Buddhist Psychology, in turn, teaches that the mind (a non-physical entity) can also be trained through meditative practices and thereby transformed, promoting well-being. It also explains the existence of the seed of love and compassion in the minds of all sentient beings. These understandings lie at the heart of psychotherapy, upholding the principle that any conditioning, affliction, or challenge is temporary, and that every human being carries within themselves the possibility of overcoming it and of fully developing their potential for love and compassion through practice.

Our mind is a creature of habit and entirely malleable. The person we are at this moment—with our qualities, limitations, and flaws—is an impermanent result of our habits, both constructive and harmful. Therapy from this orientation focuses pragmatically on acquiring tools to deconstruct emotional and behavioral habits that undermine well-being, and on cultivating those that support it.

“Understanding the system of the mind and emotions helps us maintain inner peace, whether we are religious or not.”
